There are still a few tenacious grains of sand lodged in the minute crevices of my cell phone. I've spent several days of the past week building with sand, walking upon it, sleeping encrusted with it, rinsing it from my hair and rubbing it from my skin under a torrent of cold water. Maybe sand grains were also what flashed in a brief white line above Hatteras as we watched the sky, sprawled on a picnic table, although one of them was certainly something much bigger, tumbling visibly, blazing with hints of green and yellow, and for longer than the usual eyeblink.

My body's getting a lot of abuse these days. Several weeks ago, I spent a weekend with a fever from some nasty virus. Then I threw out my back last week moving servers around, but I was determined not to miss the beach trip with Megan and Morgan, and the muscles healed just in time for me to catch a massive sunburn on Saturday. Now my skin's started peeling just in time for a camping expedition to the Outer Banks with Diana and Dean.
